This typical South Asian fruit is actually believed to be native to Africa and grows on high trees belonging to the Fabaceae family like peas and beans.
Tamarind trees bloom plentiful quantities of long, curved, brown pods which have a rough texture and contain small brown seeds, surrounded by a delicious sticky flesh that dehydrates naturally to a sticky paste.
In order to obtain the highest supply of nutrients, it is best to purchase tamarind whilst it is fresh and in its pod instead of the paste form as this can often be processed.
- Traditionally used to cure fevers, sore throats, degenerative diseases and inflammation. Dried or boiled tamarind leaves and flowers are made into poultices for swollen joints, sprains, boils, haemorrhoids, and conjunctivitis. (1)

- Nutrient-rich in healthy levels of iron which are absorbed into the bloodstream better with vitamin C present which helps to increase the speed at which oxygen is transported around the body. (7)
- Supplies the essential trace minerals magnesium and phosphorous which combine to provide electrolytes to regulate fluidity between cells and the flow of blood in the body. (8)
