A member of the Solanaceae (Nightshade) family, tomatoes are believed to have originated from Peru where they were first cultivated by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 700 AD.

Since tomatoes actually grow from a tree they are classified as a fruit.

 

From cherry to beef, there is an extensive list of different variety of tomatoes, but typically the fruit consists of a deep red skin colour, which covers its red succulent flesh containing edible seeds, and can vary from sweet to sour depending on the type.

 

Health Benefits

 

  • Particularly high in vitamin C which is an excellent phytonutrient that helps prevent dry skin, fight infections and can form antioxidants to scavenge cancerous free radicals in the body. (1)

  • A good source of vitamin K which is important for balanced blood coagulation the strengthening of bones and teeth and even can prevent cancer. (4)

 

  • Contains a plentiful supply of B vitamins, particularly B-12 (folate)which work collaboratively to ensure the healthy metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, these vitamins are essential as they can only be obtained from an outside source. (5)

 

  • Consists of good levels of manganese which is a cofactor with the antioxidant superoxide dismutase that helps eradicate harmful free radicals that cause cellular damage and helps to absorb calcium, as well as form tissues, bones, and sex hormones. (1)

Recommendation

Tomatoes should be left to ripen at room temperature to obtain the most amount of nutrients from them. Tomatoes will ripen quicker when placed near bananas or apples as they produce ethylene gas which reacts positively with the fruit.

Tomatoes rapidly absorb aluminium metals which are poisonous for humans to ingest. Therefore try to store and cook tomatoes without the use of aluminium products.
